Thankful for Family and Friends

Our first Thanksgiving in the new house- and in Gainesville! Mom, Dad, Grams and my sorority sister,"Arianne drove up from South Florida and James' grandparents drove down form Upstate New York. It was a wonderful visit with family and friends. We had some yummy food (thanks to my research online http://allrecipes.com/ ) and fall leaves from my neighbor's tree made fun place settings. After dinner we enjoyed the cool G-ville weather out on the deck around our new firepit- James even brought out the guitar for some music. It was one of the best holidays yet.

Stella Mae

I'm dedicating this post to my baby, Stella Mae, so everyone will know why I have been home so much. Her name is actually the same as my favorite beer and she shares the same "middle name" with my Grandmother, Elsie Mae. I've learned that puppies are a LOT of work and need LOTS of attention. Maybe it's a good thing I haven't found a job just yet....

James and I got Stella (who had a different name every hour the first day: Sandie, Maddy, Mel, Coco..) from a breeder in Waldo, Fl. She is an American Cocker Spaniel and as loving as they come. She came home at only 9 weeks and will be 17 weeks this Thursday- and is so smart! She was house broken in almost 3 weeks, loves to snuggle with mommy at night and chews on paper towel rolls for fun. We have been trying to teach her some tricks and I think she almost has "shake" down. The Haile Plantation vet has been great and she goes this week for her last "puppy package" appointment. Oh those kids grow up so fast... Here are a few pictures of our new baby, enjoy!

A little observation

As a creative, I am fully aware that we are all a little nutty- and certainly not always PC- which is fine- but it amazes me how much we curse. I find it pretty funny how something isn't really "great" unless it's "f*@^ing great". That's when you know you hit the mark. Tonight, in our first portfolio class, I can't even count the number of times the creative director used those rather unacceptable 4 letter words. I never thought I'd see the day when I hoped my teacher would curse at me. Yet another reason being a creative is so fun.

Just another manic Monday....

I come into the office this morning to learn that my boss is on vacation, we have another new intern and the one person i was hoping would have a great assigment for me is sick. Needless to say, it's going to be a slow week. so i shall blog.

this weekend was a rainy one, but sometimes those are the best. movies. lots of movies. James was here and we watched The Good Shephard, Blood Diamond and The Pursuit of Happiness- all 3 were quite depressing. i wouldn't recommend any of them actually. Possibly blood diamond b/c its an amazing story...but theres nothing like child soldiers to break your heart...on a lighter note, mom and dad took u on a "mystery date" to this crazy dive bar in Hallandale that had 100 international beers. i couldn't imagine eating anything from that kitchen, but after a few Stellas and a game of pool, i gave in and ate the hamburger. i lived. :) we didn't stay too long after b/c there was a band setting up that looked to be a bunch of pony-tailed high-school kids who worshiped Tool. yes, definitely a sign to head home...

Sunday afternoon we (mom dad grams james and myself) attended the Sommelier wine tasting at the Riverside Hotel in downtown ft lauderdale. Beautiful hotel- outdoor garden, etched glass on every door and a historic feel made it the best location for a tasting i've ever seen. We sampled wines from the Hahn Estates winery located in Monterey County, in central region of California's wine country. Not too bad at all. The rep was one of the best yet due to his suggested food pairings for each bottle. This should be a standard. We enjoyed the afternoon and I was happy to take James to his first tasting.

Wine recommendation: Hahn Estates 2005 Chardonnay

...i have to start somewhere i suppose. i'll just fill everyone in on what i do. i'm currently finishing up my last year (8 quarters, 4 per year) at the Miami Ad School. I'm "studying" Art Direction. People always ask me "what kind of school is that?" A response of "a portfolio school" doesn't seem to make them any less confused. Basically I take classes like brainstorming, concepting(the biz word for thinking up great ideas) web design, photography, layout, typography, strategy, all computer programs, design etc... oh yea, and the also have this little program called quarter away. the school provides us with a chance to compete for internships and take classes all over the world. its a pretty amazing opportunity.

So that's what i do. I was in Miami taking grueling classes for 5 quarters, NYC for the 6th and now interning in Ft lauderdale for my 7th. Next quarter I will finish up classes in Miami Beach (where the school is located)

I have really learned quite a bit in the past 2 years- found some things i dislike about the indusrty but overall i see vast opportunities to be creative and find a job that fits my style. i'm excited to see where my new skills will lead me and how i can make an impact on this world.
